China has a moral duty to promote a just peace in Ukraine, the diplomat said.
EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell will be in China next week. He said this at a briefing in Brussels on Tuesday, April 4.
The politician recalled that Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez recently visited China, and this week French President Emmanuel Macron and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will visit China.
“I will also go next week,” Borrell said, adding that Beijing’s position on Russia’s actions in Ukraine “will determine the quality of our relationship.”
He said that during his talks with US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken in Brussels, he discussed China’s role in the context of Russia’s war in Ukraine.
“We expect a permanent member of the UN Security Council to stand up for a rules-based world. And China has a moral duty to uphold a just world,” Borrell said.
Earlier, the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, bluntly stated that the EU’s relationship with China depends on Beijing’s position regarding the war in Ukraine.
