The state security service believes those arrested may be linked to international Islamist extremism.
Swedish law enforcement officials detained five people on suspicion of preparing a terrorist attack. This was announced on April 4 by the State Security Service of Sweden (SAPO).
The anti-terrorist operation took place on Tuesday morning in the cities of Eskilstuna, Linkoping and Strangnes.
All the detainees are suspected of planning terrorist attacks on the territory of the country, but there is no talk of directly preparing the actions themselves. Those arrested are believed to be linked to international Islamist extremism.
“Usually the security police have to act at an early stage to eliminate the threat. We cannot wait until the crime is committed. This case is one of many that the security police have faced after the protests against the Swedish state due to burning of the Koran received public attention in January, after which there were international calls for terrorist attacks,” said Susanna Treherning, deputy head of the counterterrorism department.
It can be remembered that at the beginning of the year a scandal erupted between Turkey and Sweden due to the burning of the Koran near the Turkish embassy in Stockholm.
