In Germany, the call for a ceasefire in Ukraine, published by the Berliner Zeitung newspaper, is being discussed.
It was initiated by the historian Peter Brandt, the son of the ex-Chancellor of Germany, Willy Brandt. The document was signed by many former functionaries of the Bundestag-dominated SPD and the DGB trade union, as well as artists and scientists.
The representative of the conservative CDU party for foreign policy and deputy chairman of the opposition CDU / CSU faction in the Bundestag, Johan Wadeful, called this call “primitive”. “Any ceasefire now will mean that Russia has managed to occupy part of Ukraine,” Wadeful said on Monday on the air of the ZDF television channel.
According to him, the West must continue to resist Russian aggression.
Unfortunately, for now we can only help with the supply of weapons,” Wadeful added.
Ukraine reacted sharply to the call for peace from the German Social Democrats and trade unionists
Go to hell with your senile idea of achieving a “quickest ceasefire” and “making peace only with Russia.” Ukrainians reject this nonsense,” Andriy Melnyk, Deputy Foreign Minister and former Ukrainian ambassador to Germany, wrote on Twitter.
His successor as Ukraine’s ambassador to Germany, Oleksiy Makeev, told DPA:
This call for peace is not an April Fool’s joke. This is frank cynicism towards the numerous victims of Russian aggression.
The call “Reconcile! Truce and common security now!” was published in the Berliner Zeitung on Saturday 1 April. The text calls on Chancellor Olaf Scholz to work with France to persuade Brazil, China, India and Indonesia to mediate a speedy ceasefire in Ukraine.
It would be a necessary step to stop the killings and find a way to peace. Only then will it be possible to pave the way for a common security order in Europe, the text of the appeal says.
