The Philippines has given the United States access to a base near the South China Sea and a military port near Taiwan.
The United States can use Philippine military installations located near Taiwan and the South China Sea. This was reported on April 3 by Channel News Asia, citing the office of the President of the Philippines.
Washington and Manila signed an agreement to give the US military access to four more Philippine military installations, bringing the number to nine.
Three sites are located in the north of the country – a naval base and airport in Cagayan province and an army camp in neighboring Isabela province. The military port is located about 400 km from Taiwan.
Another base is located on the island of Palabak at the southern end of the island of Palawan, washed by the South China Sea.
The US military will have the right to place weapons and ammunition at these facilities, as well as be present there, but on a rotational basis.
It will be remembered that in April the United States and the Philippines will hold the largest joint military exercises since 2015. More than 17 thousand people will participate in them, including approximately 12 thousand Americans.
The maneuvers will take place amid rising tensions between Manila and Beijing in the South China Sea.
