NATO will accept Finland tomorrow Tuesday as the thirty-first official member of the Alliance, as soon as its accession process is completed, with a ceremony on the same day that Allied foreign ministers meet at the organization’s headquarters.
“Tomorrow we will be glad Finland as the thirty-first member NATOdoes Finland and our Alliance is stronger,” said Alliance Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg at a press conference on Monday.
The process of accession of Finland, stressed the Norwegian official, was “the fastest in modern history NATO”.
The move, due to be completed on Tuesday, “will make it safer for Finland and stronger to NATO”.
Representative is expected on Tuesday Finland formally hand over the accession documents to US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, whose office is the custodian of the founding treaty of the military alliance.
Flagpole holding the flag of Finland
Last year in connection with the Russian invasion of Ukraine NATO officially invited Finland and Sweden to join the military alliance, but Turkey vetoed Sweden’s candidacy, although this position is discussed during intensive negotiations.
This Monday, on a huge platform, where the flags of 30 member countries of the alliance are raised, a mast has already been put up, which should receive Finland at the ceremony on Tuesday.
At his press conference, Stoltenberg assured that Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the invasion of Ukraine “with the clear goal of having less NATO. But in return, he will receive the exact opposite” (according to EFE and AFP).
