The US State Department explained the support of the “hybrid tribunal” for the aggressor country Russia, against which Ukraine opposes. According to Andrea Kalan, spokesman for the US Foreign Office, the so-called “hybrid tribunal” is the most effective and legitimate means of holding Russia accountable.
In an interview with Radio Liberty, Kalan indicated that the “hybrid tribunal” would be “international, but based on the legal system of Ukraine” and would not be located in Ukraine, but in another European country.
In this way, we can guarantee to ensure its impartiality and legitimacy. This is what we all aspire to, – said the representative of the US State Department.
Commenting on one of Kyiv’s objections about the impossibility under such circumstances to personally prosecute the war criminal Vladimir Putin, Kalan recalled that the International Criminal Court had recently issued a warrant for his arrest.
We all want everyone who commits and has committed crimes against Ukraine and against Ukrainians to be seen in court and to be punished. And here’s what we know is that evil will be punished and those responsible must be held accountable. That is why the United States supports this particular form of hybrid court. Because this is what can ensure that all those responsible are held accountable,” she added.
Kalan stressed that, of course, there are different forms, and the concept of a “hybrid court” needs further development, but the United States believes that such a court will be as transparent and legitimate as possible and will receive international support.
