The American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) in its regular daily report for March 29 reports a slight advance of Russian units in Bakhmut and on both sides of Avdiivka.
Based on posted and geolocated videos, ISW analysts write that Russian forces have advanced slightly in the south and southwest of Bakhmut.
A day earlier, ISW wrote that, according to its calculations, the Wagner PIK detachments, as a result of many months of fighting, now occupied about two-thirds of the territory of Bakhmut, a small town where about 70 thousand people lived before the war.
In addition, data from open sources allow ISW to assume that in the last day or two, Russian units have advanced slightly on both sides of Avdiivka, a city located near Donetsk.
Geolocated footage released on March 29 shows Russian forces likely advanced north of Vodiane (8km southwest of Avdiivka) and Veseloe (7km northeast of Avdiivka), ISW writes.
The village of Veseloe is actually directly north of Avdiivka, just a kilometer from its nearest outskirts.
Avdiivka, which the Russians stormed from the first day of the war, is now surrounded by them from three sides, but not cordoned off.
As for the changes in the front line in other areas in the last day or two, the ISW did not find reliable information – there is only information about the attacks and counterattacks of the parties in the Kupyansk area, between Kremennaya and Liman and in other places.
US military about the battle for Bakhmut
U.S. top military commander Gen. Mark Milley said Wednesday that about 6,000 professionals and 20,000 to 30,000 new Wagner recruits are fighting in and around Bakhmut, including recruited prisoners and fighting for Bakhmut. became a massacre for the Russians.
“They will suffer huge losses in the Bakhmut area. […] The Ukrainians organized a very effective defense of the territory, which is very expensive for the Russians. Because in the last 20-21 days, the Russians have not made any progress in Bakhmut and around it. So for the Russians, this is a massacre, ”the CNN website reports the words of General Milley, head of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Milley spoke with Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin on Wednesday before the House of Representatives Committee on the Armed Services.
What the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine says
From the construction of the Ukrainian General Staff on the morning of the 400th day of the war, it follows that the previous day passed in much the same way as many before it: Ukrainian units defended themselves, repelling numerous Russian attacks on the eastern sector of the front.
The enemy is concentrating his main efforts on conducting offensive operations in the Limansky, Bakhmutsky, Avdeevsky and Maryinsky directions. Units of the Defense Forces of Ukraine repulsed more than 60 enemy attacks against them, the report says.
In Bakhmut and its environs, the Russians, according to the General Staff, tried to attack 28 times a day – and each time unsuccessfully.
In general, there is no information in the code about any progress of either side.
