“Hopefully the Prime Minister (Benyamin Netanyahu) will act in a way that tries to reach a genuine compromise, but that remains to be seen,” Biden said, adding that he had not planned to invite the Israeli leader to the meeting. White Houseat least not in the short term.
Back in Washington, Biden reiterated his concern about the situation in Israel, where opponents accused Netanyahu of undermining democracy as he tries to consolidate his power.
Asked if Israeli democracy is at a tipping point, a phrase Biden often uses to describe the danger that democracies around the world face, he said: “I don’t know if they’re at a tipping point, but I think that it’s a difficult place to be, and they need to figure that out.”
He urged them to refrain from imposing controversial judicial reform. “I hope they move away from this,” he said.
