The Hungarian Parliament ratified Finland’s accession to the Alliance by a majority vote.
Bloomberg writes that the final step on the Finns’ path to joining NATO remains the ratification by Turkey, which intends to support the application in the near future.
Recep Tayyip Erdogan, speaking recently with Finnish President Sauli Niinostiio, said that Finland has taken “concrete steps” to address the concerns of groups that Turkey considers to be terrorist organizations. The President also noted once again that Sweden has not yet made “positive decisions.”
The position of Hungary also remains unchanged – the head of the Foreign Ministry said that the country is concerned about “the very disrespectful behavior of the political elites of both countries towards Hungary.”
The Prime Minister’s chief of staff, Balazs Orban, said that Hungary would ratify Sweden’s NATO membership when the Swedish side stopped criticizing Hungary.
Thanks for the clear solution! The membership of Finland and Sweden in NATO strengthens the security of the entire Alliance. Everyone is interested in having Sweden also a NATO member before the Vilnius summit,” Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin tweeted.
Now, for the Finns to join the Alliance, only the approval of Turkey is needed, which has already announced its consent. Last week, the Turkish Foreign Affairs Committee approved Finland’s NATO membership. In the near future, this issue will be considered by Parliament.
Sweden’s application has not yet been considered by either Budapest or Ankara.
