The head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, warned on Sunday that European Union (European Union) was “ready” to accept new sanctions against Belarus if it allows the deployment of Russian nuclear weapons on its territory.
“Belarus’ welcome of Russian nuclear weapons would mean an irresponsible escalation and a threat to European security. Belarus can still stop it, this is its decision. European Union ready to respond with further sanctions,” Borrell wrote on Twitter.
Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on Saturday that he plans to deploy tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus, Moscow’s main ally in Europe and on the border with Ukraine, Poland and Lithuania.
Putin claimed it was a move similar to that of the United States, which has nuclear weapons at its bases in Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Turkey.
What does NATO say?
For NATO, this is a “completely misleading” analogy. “NATO Allies are acting in full compliance with their international obligations. Russia has consistently violated its arms control obligations, recently suspending its participation in the treaty. [de no proliferación] New START,” spokeswoman Oana Lungescu said.
Experts believe that a Russian attack is likely to involve the use of small arms referred to as “tactical” as opposed to powerful, long-range, “strategic” nuclear weapons.
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko and 194 other people close to the regime are currently banned from entering the EU and have their assets frozen.
Belarus is also currently suffering from economic sanctions targeting certain sectors, including finance, trade, dual-use goods, telecommunications, energy and transport.
