Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg lashed out at top House Republicans, hours after lawmakers pushed to double down on the investigation into former President Donald Trump’s secretive case.
Bragg, who criticized GOP leaders’ “unprecedented probe” in a letter earlier this week, noted a second letter written about the case by Reps. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), James Comer (R-Ky.) and Bryan Steil (R-Wis.) — three officers who head the Judiciary, Oversight and Administration committees, respectively.
Bragg, in his response Saturday, said his office evaluates cases “based on the facts, the law and the evidence.”
“It is inappropriate for Congress to interfere with ongoing local investigations,” Bragg wrote.
“This unprecedented investigation by elected federal officials into an ongoing matter only disrupts, disrupts and undermines the legitimate work of our dedicated prosecutors.”
The response to the GOP trio, who wrote that they sought documents and testimony in the case, comes after they disputed a possible Trump indictment and said Bragg is “under political pressure from left-wing activists and former prosecutors from his office”. .
“The potential prosecution of a former president … implicates substantial federal interests, particularly in a jurisdiction where even trial judges are popularly elected,” senior Republicans said in a letter Saturday.
They later wrote: “Your conclusory claim that our constitutional oversight responsibilities will interfere with law enforcement is misleading and unpersuasive.”
The lawmakers also joked in their letter that the Judiciary Committee could draft legislation to protect current and former presidents “from such improper state and local prosecutions.”

The DA, in addition to communicating with GOP House Speakers, has acknowledged the possibility of intimidation and threats surrounding the case in recent days.
On Friday, the office received a letter containing white powder with a threatening note addressed to “Alvin.” It was later found that the contents of the letter were not threatening.
