A petition on the president’s website calling for the establishment of a day for the defenders of Mariupol has gained more than 25,000 votes in two days and must now be considered by the head of state.

The petition appeared on the president’s website on March 23. Its initiator was Ekaterina Prokopenko, wife of the commander of the Azov regiment, Hero of Ukraine Denis Prokopenko.
The petition states that “the battle for Mariupol has become a symbol of helplessness for Ukrainians,” and thanks to the courage of its defenders, “it was possible to delay a large grouping of enemy forces in the south of the country ” and “prevent the enemy from taking full advantage of the success in other sectors of the front.”
The author of the petition states that hundreds of dead, wounded and captured fighters have proved that their desperate actions deserve a memorable day.
As you know, on May 20 thousands of defenders of Azovstal left the steel plant under fire on the order to save their lives, given by the high command. Later, the Russians caught them.
