The international campaign “Earth Hour” should be ignored by Ukrainians, because it can harm the domestic energy system.
Experts explain that a simultaneous blackout is a short-term reduction in consumption. If this action is supported by many citizens, especially in large regional centers, this may lead to a power surplus in some regions. This was announced on March 25 at NPC Ukrenergo.
Friends, please do not fall for calls to join Earth Hour and turn off the lights en masse at a certain time – this does not help save electricity, does not help the Earth, but it can greatly harm the energy system, the power engineers warned.
According to Ukrenergo, in the event of a massive blackout, the dispatcher will be forced to abruptly turn off operating power units in order to balance the power system. And in wartime, when Ukrainian power plants have suffered significant damage as a result of Russian attacks, this is an extra load on the system.
Power engineers stressed that the best thing Ukrainians can do is to use electricity wisely during peak morning and evening hours to reduce the uneven consumption of electricity during the day.
As you know, in 2023 the Earth Hour event falls on March 25th. On this day, for one hour – from 20.30 to 21.30 local time, people on the planet will turn off the lights and electrical appliances.
Recall, on March 24, Prime Minister Denys Shmihal said that electricity tariffs in Ukraine would not increase until April 30 inclusive. Thus, the price of electricity until the end of the heating season will remain unchanged.
