Ukrenergo says that it is possible and necessary to save electricity, but there are more reasonable ways to do it.
Ukrenergo urges Ukrainians not to join the annual international action Earth Hour, when everyone is asked to turn off the lights for an hour. The company says it won’t help the Earth, but it could damage the power system.
“Friends, please don’t be fooled by calls to join Earth Hour and turn off the lights en masse at a certain time – it doesn’t help save electricity, it doesn’t help the Earth, but it can seriously damage the system of energy! Fortunately, Ukrainians have not been very supportive in recent years of this initiative, which is really harmful and the only thing that leads to anything is additional work for dispatchers,” said Ukrenergo.
Ukrenergo’s appeal is not unfounded – experts explain why such actions should not be carried out.
“As we constantly remind you, the amount of electricity produced at any time must match the amount consumed – this is the law of physics. A simultaneous blackout is a short-term reduction in consumption. If this action is supported of people, especially in large regional centers, this can lead to excess power in certain regions. To ensure the balance of the power system, the dispatcher will be forced to drastically reduce the power of the shunting generation – in other words, turn off the operating power Units. It’s bad even in peacetime, and now the power plants in Ukraine, like the networks, received a lot of damage from the Russian strikes. and then move – when it’s over the Earth Hour – is an extra load that is not favorable to the reliability of the electricity system,” the message said.
Ukrenergo says that it is possible and necessary to save electricity, but there are more reasonable ways to do it.
“The best contribution of all is the daily economical use of electricity in the morning and evening hours to reduce the uneven consumption of electricity during the day. We fully support eco-initiatives aimed at combating climate change. Turn on many powerful appliances at the same time and shift the consumption of powerful household appliances to the night hours. This will be your daily contribution to the preservation of nature and the energy system reliability,” reports the company’s press service.
It was previously reported that Ukraine has reduced electricity consumption
