The desire of the Russian army to stabilize the front line indicates a return to a defensive operational plan after unsuccessful offensive attempts that did not bring the desired results to Moscow. This is stated in the intelligence review of the UK Department of Defense, published on Twitter on March 25.
The assault on Bakhmut by Russian troops was largely halted. Probably, first of all, this is a consequence of the serious depletion of Russian forces.
At the same time, British intelligence states that the Armed Forces of Ukraine also suffered significant losses during the defense of the city.
The situation in Russia also likely worsened due to tensions between the Russian Ministry of Defense and the Wagner group, which provide troops in this sector, the review says.
The British Ministry of Defense points out that the Kremlin has likely shifted its operational focus to Avdiivka and the Kremennaya-Svatovo sector, areas where Russia is most likely only seeking to stabilize the front line.
This signals a general return to a more defensive operational plan after the inconclusive results of Russia’s attempts to launch a general offensive from January 2023, the review says.
Recall that earlier British intelligence reported that the Russian army had somewhat improved its position near Kremennaya.
