He Council of Europe expressed its concern this Friday about the “excessive use of force” by the French police in demonstrations against the pension reform approved by the government of Emmanuel Macron.
“There have been violent incidents, some of which were directed against law enforcement. But sporadic acts of violence by some protesters or other reprehensible acts (…) cannot justify the excessive use of force by state agents,” said the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights. Dunja Mijatovic is right.
The institution also expressed concern about the “arrest and detention” of protesters, as it could violate the “right to liberty and security” of people in Paristhe city that hosted the most violent clashes in France.
“The authorities must allow the effective exercise of these freedoms by protecting peaceful demonstrators and journalists covering these demonstrations from police violence and violent individuals who operate during or on the sidelines of the protests,” he ruled. .
Finally, Mijatović denounced the use of violence “as a means of resolving a social and/or political crisis.” “The violence must stop. This is a necessary condition for the effective exercise of freedom of speech and assembly, as well as for trust between the population and the police,” he concluded.
Macron survives censorship
The government of Emanuel Macron was saved after two no-confidence votes failed, one from the far right and the other backed by the centrists and the left, who were only nine votes short. Thus, the pension reform is considered approved, although various opposition groups have submitted appeals to the Constitutional Council.
Postponing the retirement age to 64 years and deducting 43 years to receive a full pension are some of the measures proposed by the French government to achieve a “balance” in the pension system.
Disabled people can retire earlier, starting at age 55, and disabled people from 62 years old. Those who started working earlier will be able to retire earlier. Active workers under the age of 16 will be able to do so at age 58, and those who started working between the ages of 16 and 18 at age 60; and two years later, who began their careers between the ages of majority and 20.
Among civil servants, the military, police, firefighters or nursing assistants retain the right to early retirement.
