As Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office continued to lead a criminal investigation into former President Donald Trump, they received a threatening letter Friday containing a white powder, according to multiple agencies.
The envelope and its contents came amid repeated attacks on Bragg by Trump, who called the prosecutor an “animal” on Thursday.
The letter, postmarks indicated, had been mailed Tuesday from Orlando, Florida, and came with a note that read: “ALVIN: I WILL KILL!!!!!!!!!!!” NBC News reports.
The powder was discovered in the post office and was found to be harmless, according to the New York Times.
Prosecutors in Manhattan are believed to have presented evidence against Trump to a grand jury, which will decide whether there is enough evidence to proceed with charges. Their decision could come as early as next week.
Bragg’s investigation stems from payments in 2016 to adult actor Stormy Daniels, who claimed to have had an affair with Trump. His former lawyer and fixer, Michael Cohen, admitted to paying off Daniels and served prison time for the way he was treated.
Trump posted a lengthy message on Truth Social Friday morning in which he appeared to condemn Bragg, a “degenerate psychopath who really [sic] i hate the usa!
The former president also warned of the “potential for death and destruction” if he is indicted.
His prediction last weekend that he would be arrested on Tuesday did not materialize, of course.
But the secret money probe is just one of several legal problems for Trump, who is campaigning for another presidential term.
Special counsel Jack Smith’s investigation into Trump’s handling of classified documents found at his home is also ongoing. This week, a federal judge rejected Trump’s request for executive privilege and told several top aides they must testify before a grand jury in the Smith probe. In addition, a lawyer for Trump, Evan Corcoran, appeared in court on Friday to testify.
Charges could still emerge from the Georgia investigation into Trump’s attempt to overturn the state’s 2020 presidential election results.
