The current Council of Europe is not the same organization that Russia joined in 1996, Moscow said.
Russia’s departure from the Council of Europe (CE) was the right decision and it has no intention of returning there. This was said by Nikolai Kobrinets, Director of the Department of European Cooperation of the Russian Foreign Ministry, according to a TASS report on Friday, March 24.
“Over the past year, we have only been convinced of the rightness of the choice made. Our “divorce” with Strasbourg was not a whim, but a well-thought-out decision that matured over several years. The current Council of Europe is not and all the organization that we joined in 1996. Double standards, hypocrisy and Russophobia have become its hallmarks. It is clear that with such a Council of Europe we are not on the road,” he said and added that “the page has been turned, there is nothing to regret.”
Kobrinets emphasized that Russia will not “smear black paint” over all 26 years of its stay in the Council of Europe.
“There were many useful things, especially for the development of Russian legislation. But now it is a passed stage,” the Russian diplomat summed up.
As you know, on March 16, 2022, the Council of Europe expelled Russia from the organization because of the war unleashed by the Kremlin against Ukraine.
And on February 16, 2023, the State Duma of the Russian Federation adopted a law terminating the Charter of the Council of Europe in relation to Russia, as well as 20 international agreements with the organization.
