Pristina joined Washington’s sanctions against a criminal organization active in the Western Balkans.
The Kosovo government has joined US sanctions against Russian PMCs Wagner, de facto calling it a transnational criminal organization. It was reported on March 23 by Euractiv.
It is noted that in January of this year, the US Treasury Department imposed sanctions against the group Wagner. The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, announced on 22 March that the country had joined the decision.
As Kosovo Deputy Prime Minister Besnik Bislimi stressed, the US sanctions are aimed at reducing the ability of the Russian Federation to wage war against Ukraine.
“Consequently, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora of Kosovo proposes to supplement and modify the decision of the government of Kosovo regarding the implementation of international sanctions imposed by the United States, which our republic has implemented in international obligations against in the group. Wagneras well as their partners and other companies supporting Russia’s military campaign,” he said.
According to Euractiv, the reasons why Pristina imposed sanctions on PMCs Wagnercan be linked to the group’s activity in the Western Balkans.
In January, it was revealed that the “Wagnerites” were recruiting fighters in the region, using connections with right-wing organizations. This caused a reaction from the United States and probably prompted the Treasury Department to impose additional sanctions.
Recall that the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, called on the Russian Federation to stop recruiting the country’s residents to participate in battles on the side of the PMCs Wagner in Ukraine. He later said that all Serbian “Wagnerites” would be arrested on their way home.
