North Korea today launched several cruise missiles from its northeast coast in what seems to be another response to the maneuvers that Seoul and Washington are conducting these days in the south of the peninsula.

The South Korean army “discovered several cruise missiles launched from the area hamhungin the province of South Hamgyong (northeast of the country) towards the East Sea (the name given to the Sea of Japan in two Koreas) today at about 10:15 (1:15 GMT),” the Joint Chiefs of Staff said. Headquarters (JCS) of South Korea in a statement.

This is the 10th rocket launch this year. North Koreahalf of which was in response to celebrations of the great Allied Freedom Shield Spring Maneuvers that began on March 13 and will end tomorrow.

Unlike the launch of ballistic missiles, the launch of cruise missiles is not included in the UN Security Council resolutions punishing the Pyongyang regime for developing its weapons of mass destruction program.

“The army of The Republic of Korea (Official name South) will successfully complete the Freedom Shield joint command post exercise in a strong combined defensive posture while continuing to carry out the Warrior Shield (FTX) field exercise steadily,” added the JCS.

Warrior Shield will continue to operate over the next few days, and the US nuclear-powered aircraft carrier is expected to take part in these military exercises next week.

North Korean tests

Today’s launch will take place just three days after North Korea will launch a ballistic missile for the first time from a silo designed for this purpose.

On March 16, the regime also launched the Hwaseong-17 ICBM, the projectile with the longest potential range, into the Sea of Japan.

Pyongyang has repeatedly vowed to respond decisively to the Freedom Shield exercise, the largest the allies have conducted since 2018.

The peninsula is experiencing historic levels of tension after 2022, when North Koreawhich rejected proposals to return to dialogue, conducted a record number of weapons tests and during which the allies once again conducted large maneuvers and deployed nuclear aircraft carriers or strategic bombers on the peninsula.
