Volodymyr Zelensky, President of Ukraine, today, March 21, met with Prime Minister of Japan Fumio Kishida.
This was reported on Zelensky’s Facebook page.
I am glad to welcome in Kyiv Prime Minister of Japan Fumio Kishida, a truly strong defender of the international order and a longtime friend of Ukraine,” Zelensky said.
The President stressed that the Prime Minister of Japan arrived in Ukraine “at the exact time when it is important to intensify global leadership in order to protect the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and international security in general.”
Kishida, who previously visited India, unexpectedly arrived in Ukraine on March 21.
The Japanese TV channel NHK reported that the prime minister boarded a train in Przemysl in Poland, near the border with Ukraine, around 1.30 am local time on March 21 to go to Kiev.
The trip was the first visit by a Japanese leader to Ukraine since the start of a full-scale Russian invasion, and the first time since the end of World War II that a Japanese prime minister has visited a country or territory where hostilities are taking place.
Zelenskiy invited Kishida to Ukraine during a phone call in January. Leaders of other G7 countries have already visited Ukraine, in particular, US President Joe Biden did this last month.
Kishida is expected to visit Poland on March 22 and return to Japan on March 23.
During his visit, Kishida visited the city of Bucha, Kyiv region, which suffered from Russian occupation, Reuters reports.
There he laid flowers near the local church and honored the memory of the dead with a minute of silence.
The world was amazed to see that innocent civilians were killed in Bucha a year ago. I really feel a strong anger because of this cruelty, visiting this place, – said the Prime Minister of Japan.
On behalf of the citizens of Japan, he expressed condolences to all the dead and wounded.
Japan will continue to make every effort to restore peace,” Kishida stressed.
