Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday threatened to “retaliate” if London supplied Ukraine with depleted uranium munitions after British Deputy Defense Secretary Annabelle Goldie acknowledged the possibility in Parliament.

“Today we learned that Great Britain announced in the voice of the Deputy Minister of Defense of this country that he would supply tanks not only Ukrainebut also shells with depleted uranium,” the Russian president said after meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

“I would like to emphasize in this regard that if this happens, Russia will be forced to respond in view of the fact that the West will begin to use weapons with nuclear components,” he warned.

Vladimir Putin noted that with this step, “the West, apparently, decided to really fight against Russia to the last Ukrainian, and not in words, but in deeds.”

This information, he added, was made public at a time when Moscow was discussing a peace plan with the Chinese president on Ukraine proposed by Beijing.

On the eve of the website of the British Parliament, Baroness Goldie answered a question from a member of the House of Lords Lord Hilton about the possibility of sending these shells to Ukraine.

“In addition to sending a squadron of Challenger 2 tanks to Ukrainewe will supply depleted uranium shells,” Goldie said, noting that they are more effective at hitting armored vehicles.

“Think carefully about every next step”

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said the decision would be “another step” in the escalation of the conflict. Ukraineand confirmed that “every time there are fewer steps”, for this reason he urged London to “thoroughly consider each next step.”

“Russia have something to answer. AND Russiaas they say, he will not be in debt,” he added, referring to the Russian Kornet anti-tank shells, which, according to him, are capable of penetrating almost a meter thick armor.

For the head of Russian diplomacy, Sergei Lavrov, such a move would mean that Great Britain “ready not only to take risks, but also to violate international humanitarian law, as happened in Yugoslavia in 1999.”

Lavrov assured that he would not be surprised by these supplies, “but if this happens, it will end badly for them.”

“I won’t be surprised at all because they have already lost their bearings in their actions and how these actions undermine strategic stability around the world,” he added.

Although the use of depleted uranium munitions is not prohibited by international conventions, it is highly controversial, as it is believed that in the long term they adversely affect the health of the population in the regions where they were used.
