The Chinese leader today held an informal meeting with Putin in the Kremlin and presented his “peace plan” to him.
Chinese leader Xi Jinping arrived in Russia on a working visit. Upon arrival at Vnukovo airport near Moscow, the Chinese leader was greeted by Dmitry Chernyshenko, one of the 10 vice-premiers of the Russian Federation, and a Russian military band, but President Vladimir Putin himself was not at the meeting. Later, RosSMI showed the only Xi motorcade passing through Moscow.
Note that this is the first visit by a Chinese leader to Russia since the Kremlin launched a massive invasion of Ukraine and just days after the International Criminal Court in The Hague accused the Russian president of war crimes and issued a warrant for his arrest.
Despite this, today Xi Jinping held an informal meeting with Putin in the Kremlin. The parties spoke about the close ties and common strategic views of China and Russia.
“World Travel”
China called the trip “a trip of friendship, cooperation and peace,” so Ukraine is expected to be a major point of discussion throughout Xi’s visit. Today he allegedly presented his “peace plan” to Putin.
Here, the Russian president said his aggressor country is ready for negotiations with Ukraine and “respects” China’s proposals for a “peaceful” settlement.
“We have carefully studied your proposals to resolve the acute crisis in Ukraine. You also know that we are always open to the negotiation process,” Putin Xi said.
“Of course, we will have the opportunity to discuss this issue. We know that you proceed from the principles of justice and compliance with the basic provisions of international law,” he added.
Note that Western leaders have expressed skepticism about China’s potential role as a peacemaker and its declared neutrality. And Ukraine has declared that it will closely monitor what is happening, but notes that any peace plan must begin with the withdrawal of the Russian army from our territory.
“We expect that Beijing will use its influence on Moscow to force it to end its war of aggression against Ukraine,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleg Nikolenko told CNN on Monday.
“Restoring the territorial integrity of Ukraine must be at the center of all diplomatic efforts. We are ready for closer dialogue with China to restore peace in Ukraine in accordance with the principles stated in the UN Charter and the latest resolution of the UNGA on this issue,” he added.
“dear friend”
The Chinese leader said in a meeting with Putin that “in the face of a turbulent and changing world, China is ready to continue working with Russia to reliably protect the international order.”
Putin and Xi expressed the “new impetus” that this meeting should bring to their bilateral relations. The Chinese leader also called Putin his “dear friend” and said that “Russia’s development has greatly improved under your leadership.”
“I know that another presidential election will be held in your country next year. Thanks to your strong leadership, in recent years Russia has made significant progress in achieving success and prosperity for the country. I am sure that the Russian people will fully support you in your good work,” – he said at the beginning of the meeting.
In this regard, Putin also praised Xi, saying that under his leadership, China has taken a big step forward and Russia is envious of it.
“In recent years, China has made enormous strides in its development. All over the world, this is of real interest, and we even envy you a little,” Putin said.
According to the Russian president, China has created an effective system for economic development and strengthening the state.
“It is more effective than many other countries. This is a clear fact,” he said, explaining that in China “market mechanisms are combined with a relatively confident political course.”
We add that the American media believes that Xi needs to act very carefully during his visit to Moscow. At stake for the Chinese leader is whether he can strengthen ties with a partner he sees as critical to countering US dominance without alienating a Europe increasingly wary of Sino-Russian relations.
