A strong 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck the coastal region of Ecuador and northern Peru.
The earthquake in Ecuador and northern Peru on Saturday, March 18, killed at least 14 people, injured 380, damaged several houses, schools and medical centers. This was reported by Reuters.
“We remain in the territory, assessing the damage caused by the earthquake this morning. I want to confirm that I am with you and express my solidarity with the dead,” Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso wrote on Twitter.
The US Presidential Communications Agency reported that at least 44 homes were destroyed and 90 others were damaged. About 50 educational buildings and more than 30 medical centers were also damaged, many roads were blocked due to the landslide.
Ecuador’s risk management secretariat said one of the deaths occurred in Azuay province when a wall fell on a car. According to the publication, state oil company Petroecuador has evacuated and suspended operations at several facilities.
Two weaker aftershocks followed the initial quake in the next hour, according to the Institute of Geophysics of Ecuador.
Peruvian authorities said the earthquake was felt in the northern region of the country, but there were no reports of damage to people or structures.
