LONDON (AP) – Queen Elizabeth II attended the Royal Windsor Horse Show on Friday and watched her beloved horses from the comfort of a Range Rover before reaching her box a few weeks after its first public appearance.
The monarch sat in the front passenger seat and talked to a small group through the window after he climbed the parade ground near Windsor Castle, where he has spent most of the past two years. The queen looked relaxed and smiling as dozens of photographers tried to capture the moment a few meters away.
The Queen’s public speeches are being followed closely as Britain prepares to celebrate the monarch’s 70th birthday with a four-day celebration from June 2-5.
Elizabeth, 96, has limited her schedule in recent months as she recovers from COVID-19 and is struggling with unspecified motor problems.
On Tuesday, he asked Prince Charles to preside over the opening of Parliament and deliver the Queen’s speech outlining the government’s legislative program. The event was one of the queen’s most recognizable public displays, featuring her constitutional role as head of state.
Buckingham Palace did not explain what motivated the queen to hand over her role to Prince Charles, but in recent months she has experienced what the palace calls an “episodic mobility problem.” Elizabeth used a cane in several recent public appearances and last month Prince Andrew avoided the Queen at Westminster Abbey at the memorial of her late husband, Prince Philip.
