The German chancellor urged the Russian president to stop the gunfire and seek a diplomatic solution to the conflict.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz spoke on the phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin for more than an hour about the consequences of the war in Ukraine and the world food crisis. This was announced on Friday, May 13, by the representative of the federal government, Steffen Hebeshtreit.
He noted that the conversation focused on the war going on in Ukraine and efforts to end it. Hebeshtreit stressed that Scholz called Putin after talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on May 11.
“Given the seriousness of the military situation and the consequences of the war in Ukraine, especially in Mariupol, the chancellor called on the Russian president to reach a ceasefire, improve the humanitarian situation and progress towards a diplomatic solution to fight soon., “said a federal government spokesman.
The chancellor, stressed the German government, “clearly denied accusations of the spread of Nazism in Ukraine.”
Scholz and the President of Russia also discussed the global food crisis, exacerbated by Russia’s aggression. At the same time, the Chancellor recalled that Russia has a special responsibility here.
Earlier in the Kremlin, reporting on Putin’s talks with Scholz, they said negotiations on the end of the war were allegedly “blocked by Kyiv.”
