PMC Wagner, founded by businessman Yevgeny Prigozhin who is close to Russian President Vladimir Putin, is a shadow tool of the Russian government, Lithuania’s Seimas said.
The Lithuanian Seimas unanimously approved a resolution recognizing the Russian Wagner group as a terrorist organization. The document was supported by 117 deputies, according to the website of the Lithuanian Parliament on Tuesday, March 14.
“The Wagner private military company of the Russian Federation is a terrorist organization, and its mercenaries threaten the security of the state and society,” the document said.
The Seimas strongly condemned the use of any mercenary groups, such as Wagner, created with the support of the Russian authorities, to commit crimes of aggression on the territory of Ukraine.
The resolution states that Wagner’s mercenaries “have committed systematic, serious crimes of aggression – they kill and torture civilians in Ukraine, bomb residential buildings and other civilian objects – which amount to terrorism .”
“PMC Wagner, founded by businessman Yevgeny Prigozhin who is close to Russian President Vladimir Putin, is under EU and US sanctions for interfering in the democratic processes of foreign countries, facilitating the implementation of imperialist ambitions of the Kremlin, is a shadow tool of the Russian government – it receives military equipment from the Russian government free of charge, such as how the Grad missile system, tanks, armored vehicles use military infrastructure of Russia, the company’s fighters were trained by the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Russian Federation,” the resolution said.
The Seimas drew attention to the fact that the EU and the US announced sanctions against the Wagner group for participating in the Russian war in Ukraine, as well as for committing serious crimes, including mass executions, rape, kidnapping of children, physical violence and other human rights violations in the Central African Republic, Sudan and Mali.
Earlier, Prigozhin announced the reboot of the Wagner PMC. He announced the recruitment of new mercenaries and said he wanted to turn it into an “ideological army.”
