Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba submitted the candidacies of ambassadors to China, India and Brazil for presidential approval.
He announced this on March 13 on Facebook.
The post of Ambassador to China has been vacant since May 2019, when Oleg Demin left it. Charge d’Affaires of Ukraine is now Viktor Ponomarev.
The candidacy of the Ambassador of Ukraine to China is going through the final stages of approval. The position is important – a balanced approach is needed. This will be an experienced and professional person, and to be respectfully received by our Chinese partners,” the Foreign Ministry said in a comment.
At the same time, the process of appointing an ambassador does not have a clear time frame.
After the candidate is approved by the president, an appeal is sent to the foreign party, which considers it and gives its consent to the appointment. After receiving the agrement, a corresponding presidential decree is prepared, and credentials are signed. The newly appointed ambassador is preparing for a business trip, holding meetings in ministries and departments and leaving for the country of destination.
Recall that the minister is looking for strong candidates for the positions of ambassadors in a number of African countries. According to him, only in more than 20 countries now there are vacancies for Ukrainian ambassadors. However, Kuleba clarified that “under the condition of equal professional indicators, he will give preference to women.”
Earlier, Kuleba said that precisely because of the problem with the selection of candidates, there are still no ambassadors of our country in Brazil, India and China. During an interview with BBC Ukraine, he called these countries difficult.
A very difficult country, it is very difficult to find a person who would meet our expectations. But we will find it,” he explained the situation with our ambassador to India.
As for other countries, there are now certain candidates and tentative understanding for the post of ambassadors in Brazil and China, but the process has not yet been launched. Kuleba noted that, for example, a diplomat working in China must meet a number of criteria.
For each country we select an ambassador who meets a certain vision. Some were candidates, fell away, someone for personal reasons changed their desire to work. I myself am dissatisfied that there has been no ambassador to China for two years, but the circumstances have developed,” the head of the Foreign Ministry said.
At the same time, he refused to comment on the information that Minister of Strategic Industries Pavlo Ryabikin could become Ukraine’s Ambassador to China.
