German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has decided to change the head of the armed forces after his recent controversial comments about the actions of the Russian army in Ukraine.
Bild and AFP, citing sources in the German military department, said that General Eberhard Zorn as Inspector General of the Bundeswehr will be replaced by Major General Carsten Breuer.
Zorn, 63, has held the post since 2018. In September last year, he questioned the ability of the Ukrainian military to fully resist the Russian forces.
In an interview with Focus magazine, he said that Ukraine is conducting “counterattacks that can win back places or parts of the front, but not push Russia back on a broad front.”
He also expressed concern that Russia might open a second front of the war, naming the possible directions of Kaliningrad, the Baltic Sea, the border with Finland, Georgia and Moldova.
According to media reports, Zorna will be early retired from Thursday.
Breuer, 59, who succeeded him, led the government’s coronavirus pandemic response team from November 2021 to May 2022, AFP recalls.
Boris Pistorius became head of the Defense Ministry in January.
