“Golden Parachute” Why Lukashenka flew to Iran

The leader of Belarus began to doubt Putin’s abilities and was looking for a new patronage instead of Russian.

The head of the ruling regime in Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, visited another country for the second time since the beginning of the month. In particular, he arrived in Iran on Sunday night and was received by President Ebrahim Raisi on Monday. Officially, his visit is scheduled to coincide with the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, but experts name another reason for Lukashenka’s international activity – the search for new patronage instead of Russian.

Tehran’s statements

The two presidents and their delegations held talks that resulted in the signing of eight agreements on trade, mining and transportation.

“Today we reached an agreement on a comprehensive roadmap between Iran and Belarus until 2026,” Raisi said at a joint conference with Lukashenko following the talks.

“This comprehensive roadmap between Iran and Belarus describes the political and economic conditions and covers all areas of interest of the two countries,” he added.

The Iranian President also said that Tehran has turned US and Western sanctions into opportunities for itself and is ready to share its experience in dealing with sanctions with “friendly” Belarus. Both countries oppose “unilateralism,” Raisi said.

Lukashenka also met with Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Hosseini Khamenei.

“Countries under US sanctions must work together and form a joint team to destroy the weapons of sanctions, and we believe that this can be done,” said Khamenei Lukashenko.

What did Lukashenka say?

The self-proclaimed leader of Belarus said sanctions could be turned into opportunities and added that he looked forward to expanding economic ties with Iran. The parties agreed to set a $100 million target for bilateral trade this year.

“Both Iran and Belarus want to see a just multipolar world… The two countries have full trust in each other, and their two countries also support the expansion of relations,” said Lukashenka.

He also said that he “watches with great respect the tenacity with which the (Iranian – ed.) people are resisting external pressure, trying to impose someone else’s will on them.”

“And I see that, despite everything, you are developing modern technology and nuclear power,” he added on Iran’s controversial nuclear program, which has triggered tough international sanctions against the country.

“We can be mutually beneficial if we really unite our efforts,” Lukashenka added.

It should be noted that during the press conference, neither side officially spoke about the war with Ukraine and Russia, which both countries consider a close ally.

Doubts about Putin

Lukashenko began to actively seek new patronage instead of Russian because of the lack of trust in Vladimir Putin, believes an expert of the Foreign Policy Council. Ukrainian prism Alexander Kraev.

“Lukashenko’s rhetoric on Iran and China is the same, the psychological and political message is the same. Lukashenka is looking for a protector. He realizes that Putin cannot ensure the succession to the throne for his descendants,” said Kraev during Espresso.

According to the expert, the head of the ruling regime in Belarus is beginning to doubt Putin’s ability to protect “him, his family and his regime.”

“Lukashenko, as an experienced politician, understands that he needs a “golden parachute.” He needs ways out of the situation that may arise when the Putin regime falls. Finally, Lukashenka begins to understand this. We can take such doubts about Putin in Lukashenka as a positive sign. Our enemies are starting to distrust each other,” Kraev added.
