The abbot of the Lavra, Metropolitan Pavel, relied on the current laws and declared that today is “not the 17th year.”
Monks of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate will not be expelled from the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra. His vicar, Metropolitan Pavel, said this on Monday, March 13.
“We do not intend to leave and do not, because there are laws now on the side of people. We are in danger that they will face us – this is not the 17th year. Now there is a community in the world, there is a kind of culture ,” said the Metropolitan.
At the same time, he assured that the UOC-MP is not against “all legal actions”, including inspections.
“We are not collaborators, we are citizens of our country. We are people who have been living here since 1988, many have no other place but here,” he added.
Last week it became known that the monks of the UOC-MP were ordered to leave the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra until March 29. And the day before, the Ministry of Culture warned the UOC-MP against stealing relics from the Lavra, which threatens criminal liability.
And now the Kremlin has expressed anger at the request for UOC monks to leave the Lavra in Kyiv.
