The reason for the note of protest was the flight of an Iranian military aircraft near Azerbaijan’s borders, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry and Defense Ministry said in a joint statement.
Iran’s ambassador to Azerbaijan was summoned to the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry, where he was given a note of protest regarding the flight of an Iranian military aircraft near Azerbaijan’s borders. It was reported by Interfax-Azerbaijan.
Official Baku reportedly considers Tehran’s actions a provocation.
“On March 11, 2023, a military aircraft belonging to the Islamic Republic of Iran continued to fly over the Azerbaijani-Iranian state border in the direction from Zangilan region to Bilasuvar region and back from 09:44 until 10:26. The aircraft flew at a distance of 3-5 km from the state borders, and in some cases even at the state border,” the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry and Defense Ministry said in a joint statement.
It was noted that such an approach of an Iranian military aircraft to the border of the state of Azerbaijan and a flight over the border line threatens the security of civil aviation and worsens relations between the countries.
“We strongly condemn the Iranian side for such a provocative step, we urge them to give appropriate explanations and refrain from such provocative steps in the future,” the statement said.
It was previously reported that Iran and Saudi Arabia are resuming diplomatic relations after seven years.
