President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky considered an electronic petition, the author of which proposes to officially change the name “Russia” to “Muscovy”, the terms “Russian” to “Moscow”, and “Russian Federation” to “Moscow Federation”.
The author of the petition, which has collected more than 25 thousand signatures, notes that “the historical name of Russia is Muscovy.”
This name has been used in European and some Asian languages. This name also appears on many historical maps of the 16th-19th centuries made in Europe before and after the renaming of the Moscow kingdom into the All-Russian, the petition says.
The author of the appeal notes that “Russia has existed for only 301 years” – since October 22, 1721, when the Moscow Tsar Peter I declared the Moscow kingdom to be the “Russian Empire”.
In his response, Zelensky noted that “the issue addressed in the petition needs to be carefully studied both from the point of view of the historical and cultural context, and taking into account possible international legal consequences.”
Zelensky also said that he appealed to Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal to comprehensively work out this issue together with scientific institutions.
This proposal was earlier made by Ukrainian Ambassador to the UN Serhiy Kyslitsa, who believes that Ukraine can pass a law that will call Russia Muscovy.
