Official Riyadh said it is ready to mediate between Ukraine and Russia in terms of negotiations.
Saudi Arabia and Russia discussed Ukraine, grain and Syria at the meeting of foreign ministers. This was said by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Saudi Arabia, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, Bloomberg reported on Thursday, March 9.
According to him, he spoke with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov about the “importance of deep coordination between the Kingdom and Russia in the energy markets” and expressed his country’s “unwavering commitment” to the agreement in OPEC +,
He also mentioned that Riyadh is ready to mediate between Kiev and Moscow. The Kingdom supports international efforts to find a political solution to the “crisis” (as he calls the war in Ukraine).
“I reaffirmed to the Russian foreign minister the kingdom’s readiness to make every effort to mediate between the parties,” the Saudi official said.
Lavrov, speaking at a joint press conference in Moscow, said that the war in Ukraine has not affected energy cooperation.
He also raised a question about Syria, where Russia has been actively involved since 2015 in support of President Bashar al-Assad. In his opinion, Syria should be allowed to return to the Arab League. However, Saudi Arabia responded by saying such a move was premature.
As previously reported, the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud.
