House Republicans, who he promised to investigate the Democrats if they regained control of the House this year, they now have a plan to investigate the select committee that investigated the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot, CNN reported Wednesday. Those plans reportedly include conducting investigations into Capitol security at the time of the attack and possibly into how the January 6 defendants were treated by the legal system.
Representative. Barry Loudermilk (R-Ga.), of which the House Select Committee investigating the January 6 attack was blamed tours the Capitol the day before the riot, will lead the effort, according to NBC News.
“I spend some time there, wrapping my hands around what we have. We’ll see what happened in the Capitol. What happened before? How did I get such a security breach? Loudermilk told CNN. “The Jan. 6 commission didn’t take that approach … I think they looked more at the political side.”
The house management committee has already launched one portal where people “with knowledge of the events” can provide information about the January 6 insurrection and committee.
“My intention is to lead us where the facts lead us to the truth,” Loudermilk added in his CNN interview.
The bipartisan House Select Committee investigated the Capitol riot and the events leading up to it for a year and a half, holding a series of televised hearings and releasing a formal report recommending that the Justice Department launch an investigation into former President Donald Trump’s involvement Trump.
Contrary to Republican claims, the committee investigated security failures before the uprising. A separate bipartisan Senate inquiry also detailed “how failures of security, planning and response led to an unprecedented violent breach of the United States Capitol” and offered recommendations to avoid similar breaches in the future.
Rioting Trump supporters, who marched on Capitol Hill after a rally claiming the 2020 election was “stolen” from them, tried to prevent a joint session of Congress from certifying the Electoral College tally for Joe Biden. The riot left at least five people dead and at least 140 law enforcement officers injured. Charges were filed against more than 1,000 rioters. The Jan. 6 committee was able to subpoena more than 100 people, interview more than 1,200 and gather large amounts of documents and records in the process, NBC News reported.
Trump sued in an effort to prevent himself from providing documents and testimony, and the committee eventually expired before being disbanded in January of this year when the new GOP House majority was sworn in. The committee withdrew its subpoena for Trump shortly before. breakup, the New York Times reported.
News of the Republican investigation into detectives comes the same week Fox News pundit Tucker Carlson shared new footage of the Capitol riot on his show Monday, downplaying the violence of the attack. The tapes were provided to him by House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.). McCarthy defended his decision to provide the footage to Carlson, saying he wanted to provide the public with “transparency” so people could make up their own minds about how the events of Jan. 6 unfolded.
Other prominent Republicans, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), criticized Fox News’ handling of the footage.
Representative. Pete Aguilar (D-Calif.), a committee member who has been dead since Jan. 6, told CNN they are ready for the Republican investigation.
“It’s something we’ve been thinking about for the last two years. I knew there could be political consequences. … We’ll see what happens and be ready,” Aguilar said. “There is no limit to what [McCarthy] will do to deliver on those promises as much as possible within his caucus.”
