Turkey continues NATO talks with Finland and Sweden

The Scandinavian countries have made some progress, said the representative of the Turkish President.

Turkey’s negotiations with Finland and Sweden on the accession of the latter two to NATO continued on March 9 in Brussels. The meeting was moderated by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, the press service of the Alliance said.

This is the third dialogue under the mechanism based on the tripartite memorandum signed on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Madrid in June 2022.

Turkish presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin said the country expects Finland and Sweden to fully implement the memorandum for NATO membership, Hurriyet reported.

He noted that some of the steps taken by Finland and Sweden to implement the memorandum are satisfactory, but the entire process has not yet been completed.

According to Kalin, the Swedish authorities have promised to work more effectively with the law, which is one of the conditions for Turkey’s approval of the country’s membership in NATO.

“We will continue to strictly monitor the measures related to the fight against terrorism … We stand for the full implementation of the agreement. We support NATO’s decision to expand,” the representative of the Turkish president emphasized.

Let us remind you, the negotiations between the three countries were stopped in January after the Koran burning protest in Stockholm.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said last week that progress had been made in negotiations with Turkey on Sweden’s bid for NATO membership.
