Camp Viking will only operate for 10 years, in the winter of 2023, Britain will station around 1,000 commandos there.
Britain commissioned the Camp Viking base for Royal Marines special forces in northern Norway, 65 km south of Tromso. The British Navy reported this on Wednesday, March 8.
“The location of the base is ideal for containing threats in the region, it is located so that the United Kingdom can respond quickly if necessary to protect the northern part of NATO and its close ally Norway,” the agency said in a statement.
They also added that “the new base for conducting operations in the Arctic will support British special forces for 10 years, while the United Kingdom underlines its commitment to the task of ensuring security in the Arctic .”
Note that Norway refuses to create permanent bases for foreign military, so Camp Viking will only operate for 10 years.
This winter, about a thousand special forces will be stationed at the base.
As previously reported, Norwegian intelligence urged the world to pay attention to the presence of Russian submarines in the Arctic, which may have tactical nuclear weapons.
We add that, according to former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed he could send a missile to hit Britain “within a minute.”
