Articles about the possible involvement of a “pro-Ukrainian group” in the Nord Stream explosions in September 2022 were published by the New York Times, Die Zeit and the Washington Post.

In September 2022, the main route for pumping Russian gas into Europe, the Nord Stream, stopped working. After the explosions on the Danish island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea, only four leaks were found in two pipelines. The sites of the explosions are located in international waters in the exclusive economic zones of Denmark and Sweden. This week, articles about the possible involvement of a “pro-Ukrainian group” in the Nord Stream explosions were published by the New York Times, Die Zeit, Washington Post and The Times.

Pro-Ukrainian group?

First, the New York Times, citing intelligence sources, reported that a “pro-Ukrainian group” was behind the sabotage, which may include both Ukrainians and Russians opposed to Vladimir Putin.

According to the newspaper, the Americans did not go into details about where they got this information and how reliable it is, but at the same time they claim that they have no evidence that the office of Vladimir Zelensky knew about the action that it, prepares or authorizes it.

According to the NYT, the officials who own this intelligence do not yet know how much importance to attach to it, due to the fact that any hint of direct or indirect involvement of Kiev in the pipeline explosion could be jeopardized its delicate relationship with its Western partners. , and first of all in Germany, which, due to solidarity with Ukraine, made serious economic sacrifices.

However, the Americans hope that their intelligence services, along with their European counterparts, will soon or know that the perpetrators will be found. Meanwhile, they said that no facts were found indicating the involvement of the Ukrainian government in the explosions.

Elite diver

The NYT was followed by an article by Die Zeit. According to the publication, the operation at sea was carried out by a group of six people, which included two divers and two of their assistants – they delivered the explosives to the gas pipeline.

The article says the operation involved a vessel chartered by a Polish company owned by two Ukrainian citizens.

According to Zeit, traces of explosives were found on the yacht. Although the ship’s charterers were Ukrainian citizens, the client of the wreck remained unknown, and experts were inclined to believe it might have been a false flag operation so suspicion fell on Ukraine.

Influential customers

The British edition of the Times claims that the sabotage of the gas pipelines was organized by private individuals from Ukraine. According to the newspaper, the name of the suspect who ordered the arrangement of the explosions was allegedly known to Western intelligence for several months, but was not disclosed to avoid a conflict, especially between Ukraine and Germany .

The newspaper said that the “influential figure” who financed the operation did not intend to strengthen the position of critics of the German arms transfer, which puts pressure on the government of Olaf Scholz.

According to the Times, the complex operation involved bringing in a yacht, elite divers, fake passports, and the purchase of shaped-charge explosives that can only be used in the gas and oil industry under a special license and in great expense.

“His name will definitely get out there, especially since he left a calling card of sorts,” the publication concluded.

replied Kyiv

Mikhail Podolyak, adviser to the head of the office of the President of Ukraine, emphasized that Ukraine had nothing to do with this incident and had no information about “pro-Ukrainian sabotage groups.”

“While I enjoy collecting funny conspiracy theories about the Ukrainian government, I have to say: Ukraine had nothing to do with the accident in the Baltic Sea,” wrote Podolyak.

“For me, this is a rather strange story, it has nothing to do with us. I think the official investigation carried out by the relevant authorities will describe all the details. This is a definite compliment for our special forces, but this is not our activity,” – said the head of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, Oleksiy Reznikov.
