The capture of the city will allow the Russians to move to other settlements, the Ukrainian leader explained.
The occupation of Bakhmut by the Russians will open the way for the enemy to other settlements in the Donetsk region. Therefore, Ukraine continued to defend Bakhmut and did not withdraw troops. This was said by the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky in an interview with CNN, published on Tuesday, March 7.
The Ukrainian command decided to continue the defense of Bakhmut based on tactical considerations, the head of state explained.
“We understand that after Bakhmut they can go further. They can go to Kramatorsk, they can go to Slavyansk, it will be an open road for the Russians after Bakhmut to other Ukrainian cities in the direction of Donetsk ,” he says.
According to him, Ukrainian motives to defend the city are very different from Russian military goals.
“We understand what Russia wants to achieve there. Russia needs at least some kind of victory – a small victory – even if it destroys everything in Bakhmut, just kills all the civilians there,” Zelensky added .
The head of state emphasized that if the invaders manage to “plant their little flag over the city,” it will help mobilize the Russians to create the impression that they are a very strong army.
As already reported, this week at a meeting of the Headquarters of the Supreme Commander, it was decided that the Armed Forces of Ukraine will continue to defend Bakhmut and even strengthen the positions in the city.
