Ursula von der Leyen will replace Jens Stoltenberg if he is not elected to the European Commission, according to La Repubblica.
The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, can apply for the position of NATO Secretary General if she is not re-elected to the European Commission. The Italian edition of La Repubblica reported this on Tuesday, March 7.
The media say that European officials have already started preparations for such a move a few weeks ago.
The head of the European Commission will leave for Canada and the United States on Tuesday. His trip should be “viewed in a different light”, that is, with a possible nomination as a candidate for the role of NATO Secretary General, the publication believes.
The newspaper also added that at the NATO summer summit in Vilnius, Alliance members will try to extend the powers of Jens Stoltenberg, whose term ends in September, for another year. At the same time, von der Leyen’s term will end in the summer of 2024.
Ursula von der Leyen would be the “perfect solution” for the US, as Washington has long considered a woman for this position, media reports.
Remember, Ursula von der Leyen said on March 6 that the European Union has succeeded in relying on Russian gas and oil supplies. European companies were able to cover 80% of Russian gas exports with supplies from the US and Norway.
Even earlier, Ursula von der Leyen said that China’s “peace plan” should be seen in terms of Beijing’s friendship with Moscow.
