Since Thursday, Russian forces have launched a three-pronged attack north of Bakhmut. This thrust seeks to cut off the only road still connecting the city’s defenders to their rear, a narrow road leading to the great city of Chasiv Yar, four kilometers further west.
Completely destroyed and almost deserted, the city, with 4,500 of its 70,000 inhabitants before the war, is rumored to be on the verge of being abandoned by its last defenders. The hypothesis gained momentum as supplies became difficult and Ukrainian forces dynamited one of the few bridges still viable.
