NEW YORK (AP) – New York Congressman Tom Reed will step down and step down seven months before his term expires.
Reed said last year that he would not be re -elected. So he was accused of sexual harassment. But in a speech to the U.S. House of Representatives he said he would step down on Tuesday.
He did not give a reason for his resignation, but said more needed to be done to “put people before politics”.
“I want to continue this work and hope to have a greater impact on our country,” Reed said.
His office did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
A Republican woman in West New York was accused of staining the back of a lobbyist and removing a bra at a networking event at the Minneapolis Pub in 2017 without her permission.
Reed apologized days after the allegations were made in March 2021, saying the incident happened at a time when he said he “fought” and began treatment after realizing he had “no power behind his back.” alcohol.
Reed, who was first elected to Congress in 2010, said in early 2021 that he would consider running as governor of New York if Andrew Cuomo ran again. Cuomo, a Democrat, resigned as governor in August on allegations of sexual harassment, which he denied.
Reed, when he apologized last year, said he would not be racing for any position in 2022.
New York Governor Katie Hochul’s office did not immediately respond to questions about when she would call special elections to fill Reed’s seat before the November election.
Reed was former Mayor of New York Corning and co-chair of the House’s bipartisan problem-solving group.
He voted in favor of the impeachment of former President Donald Trump in January 2021, but he supported the confirmation of the 2020 election by Democrat Joe Biden.
Reed is the second New York Republican to quit racing this year. New York State Attorney John Katko, who was among 10 MPs in the House who voted in favor of impeaching Trump, announced earlier this year that he had no plans to re-elect.
