The Ministry of Justice compiles the results of the conference United for Justice

The participants of the event discussed several legal issues related to the war launched by the Russian Federation against Ukraine.

The Ukrainian side took part in the conference United for justice. The main purpose of the event is to provide a legal assessment of the war unleashed by Russia. This was announced by Deputy Minister of Justice Irina Mudraya on her Facebook page on Saturday, March 4.

“United for Justicea conference already named Legally Rammstein. The event was at a very high level, for three days the first people of our state and the heads of international legal institutions, the heads of relevant ministries of partner countries have been and will participate in different panels,” he said.

According to him, “the main accents are the creation of a Special Tribunal for the crime of aggression of the Russian Federation, as well as the Compensation Mechanism.”

The discussion was opened by a special guest of the panel, Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmigal.

• On February 17, the Government of the Netherlands agreed to the creation in The Hague of an international organization – the Register of damage caused by Russia in Ukraine. The first step towards the launch of the International Compensation Mechanism has been taken.

• The next step is the creation of the Compensation Commission and Compensation Fund. It is planned that the Fund will be filled with Russian assets frozen abroad. According to various sources, partner countries have frozen more than $300 billion in reserves of the Central Bank of Russia.

• It is important for us that the frozen Russian assets and sanctioned persons remain blocked, confiscated and then transferred to the Compensation Fund, which will work under the international compensation mechanism.

• The main question in the panel discussion. Legal grounds must be developed for seizing Russia’s fixed assets, sovereign assets, and we hope that the political will on the part of governments and parliaments for this will be ensured.

• For example, Canada and the United States have already adopted several legislative decisions on the confiscation and transfer of assets in Ukraine. We look forward to working with the leadership of other partner countries.

• The most important is cooperation with the G7, especially the creation of a joint document that will record the decision to confiscate Russia’s arrested assets in the Compensation Fund.

• The ongoing work on the search and seizure of property of persons allowed by Russia abroad deserves special attention.

“The partners who have been with us since the first days of the war remain and cooperate without losing their enthusiasm and faith in our common victory. Yes, they work at their own pace, not always quickly, but very carefully, cautiously. The those decisions made afterwards, bring our success closer and not only in the legal field,” said Mudraya.

According to him, Ukraine’s partners understand that “only together we can resist Russia’s full-scale, unprovoked and brutal aggression, restore justice and punish those responsible.”

Recall that the Ministry of Justice will conclude the international agreement on reparations and create a register of damage caused by the Russian military aggression.

In addition, in December last year, the Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) discussed legal mechanisms for financial compensation to Ukraine for the damage caused by the Russian aggression.
