World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus this Friday asked any country with any information on the origin of the COVID-19 pandemic to share it with the organization and the rest of the scientific community.
This would allow the world to understand what has happened, prevent another pandemic, and be prepared just in case one is imminent, he added, responding to FBI Director Christopher Wray’s recent assertion that the pandemic was likely caused by a leak in a laboratory in Wuhan (China).
Tedros explained that WHO “has not abandoned its plans to identify the sources of the pandemic COVID-19contrary to what press reports and politicians’ comments indicate.”
He expressed regret that investigations into how the health emergency began have persisted in politicization, as he believes that this only makes it more difficult to find the truth.
WHO research
WHO created a scientific advisory group in 2021, formed by experts from different countries, to determine the origin of new pathogens, including the causes COVID-19.
China dismissed the FBI director’s comments that undermined confidence and urged the US to respect “science and facts.”
A mission of scientists – prior to the establishment of the advisory group – visited Wuhan a year after the outbreak of the pandemic and conducted on-site studies, and although it did not come to definitive conclusions, it considered it unlikely that the pandemic COVID-19 The cause was a leak from the laboratory.
Later advisors WHO recommended a series of studies that could clarify the situation and that should be carried out in China and other countries in order to test or rule out various hypotheses related to the origin COVID-19.
“Hypothesis on the table”
“We continue to ask China to be transparent and share information, conduct necessary investigations and share results,” said Tedros, who said he has written or spoken to Chinese authorities several times to that end.
Person responsible for WHO He argued that until this happens, “all hypotheses about the origin of the virus remain on the table.”
“Understanding the origin COVID-19 This continues to be a scientific imperative, but also a moral imperative in the face of the millions of people who have lost their lives, their families and those suffering from chronic covid,” he commented.
