Russia is trying to use Western fears of nuclear escalation to slow down its military support for Ukraine.

Russia’s nuclear threats are designed to delay Ukraine’s military support. This also applies to the decision to suspend Russia’s participation in the nuclear arms treaty. This is what the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) said in their report.

Experts note that on March 2, at the G20 summit in India, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken spoke briefly with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov about Russia’s suspension of the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty.

The American official said that the United States is ready to cooperate with Russia in the field of strategic nuclear arms control, regardless of the status of the war in Ukraine and relations between the countries.

Blinken called on Russia to stop the war in Ukraine, sit at the negotiating table and release imprisoned US citizen Paul Whelan. At the same time, ISW believes that the hope for meaningful discussions on the renewal of this agreement with Russia is meaningless.

“The Kremlin is likely using the fear of nuclear escalation and the suspension of Russia’s participation in the agreement in hopes of curbing Western support for Ukraine and slowing promised Western military aid. threats of nuclear escalation, trying to intimidate the West,” analysts said.

As you know, on February 21, in an address to the Federal Assembly, Putin used nuclear threats and announced the suspension of Russia’s participation in the START Treaty.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said such a decision by Russia would destroy the entire architecture of arms control.

US State Department head Anthony Blinken called Russia’s decision on START irresponsible.
