During the Russian occupation of Kherson, about 400 people went missing, some of them died in the dungeons.
About 20 torture chambers were found in Kherson, where the Russian occupiers kept the residents of the temporarily captured city. This system of prisons is funded from Russia at the state level. Important Stories reported this, citing British lawyer Wayne Jordash, who heads the Mobile Justice Team, which is helping Ukrainian authorities investigate crimes by Russians in Kherson.
According to Jordash, the Russian military is responsible for some prisons, and the FSB is responsible for others. Also, civilians took part in the management of torture facilities – both collaborators from Kherson and guests from the occupied territories of Donetsk and Lugansk regions.
It was mentioned that one of those involved was the head of the occupation administration of the Kherson region, Vladimir Saldo. “We don’t know what role he had, but he was involved in the management of this system,” Jordash noted.
The lawyer also said that now the Ukrainian prosecutor’s office and the lawyers of his Mobile Justice Team have studied the testimony of about a thousand people who are in these prisons. It is difficult to say how many Ukrainians went through them in total, because there is still so much undiscovered material. At the same time, Dzhordash emphasized that most of the testimonies made were given by people who were in two or three prisons out of 20. Some of them escaped.
The British lawyer added that during the Russian occupation of Kherson, about 400 people went missing, some of them died in the dungeons.
“What surprised me the most was how organized, planned and calculated everything was. In 20 years of my work, this was the first time I encountered this,” said Dzhordash, who participated in the investigation of war crimes in Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia. He also expressed the opinion that Russia set itself the task of suppressing Ukrainians and destroying the Ukrainian identity.
Earlier, the Ministry of Internal Affairs reported that the invaders had torture facilities in all captured cities and towns.
