‘Non-aligned’ countries demand a seat on the Security Council, but shy away from war with Ukraine

Today, the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) has demanded a permanent seat in parliament. Security Advisor UN during the group’s 19th summit, where China surprised both members and observers by declaring that it remains a “developing country”.

On Thursday, Baku hosted representatives of a 120-member movement that is seeking its place in the new world order as it tries to counter the aftermath of the Russian-Ukrainian war.

The conflict flew over the meeting, but its participants focused on the measures that need to be taken to reactivate their economic development after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Veto power for non-aligned

In particular, he urged France to respect the rights of its overseas colonies, which he considered an “unfortunate” relic of bygone times, and urged her to “apologise” for the crimes committed in her “colonial past”.

China, developing country

Chinaobserver country, reminded the world that it continues to be a “developing country” and emphasized that solidarity and cooperation with said bloc is “part of the DNA” of its foreign policy.

“China will always be with the developing family. China will fight for equality and justice throughout the world,” said Chinese government special representative for Eurasian affairs Li Hui.

He stressed that Beijing has contributed to the development of about 160 countries and canceled the debts of many others.

For all these reasons, he called for a cooperative global security that includes the peaceful resolution of crises, clearly alluding to Ukraine and the Asian giant’s peace initiative.

“We must never refuse dialogue, no matter how complex the problem,” he stressed.

And he warned that “Cold War mentality, hostile politics and partisan practices will only divide the world.”

He strongly advocated multilateralism and global governance “in which all countries participate fully in international relations.”

Venezuela and Cuba against American military action

Latin American countries were represented to a greater or lesser extent by Venezuela, Cuba, Chile, Mexico, Argentina and Ecuador.

Venezuela and Cuba opposed the sanctions and blockade imposed on their countries by the United States.

“We have seen the criminal consequences of these coercive measures. We demand their complete, immediate and unconditional end,” said Venezuelan Vice Minister for Multilateral Affairs Ruben Molina.

Molina rated 900 direct or indirect unilateral measures taken against Caracas as tools to “destroy the Venezuelan economy”.

“And provoke regime change in violation of international law,” he denounced.

He recalled that on March 1, the United States extended “for the seventh time” the law imposing sanctions against Venezuela.

For his part, Cuban Vice President Salvador Valdes Mesa thanked the Non-Aligned Movement for supporting the “legitimate demand” to end the blockade of the island.

He also noted non-aligned condemnation of the “false” inclusion of Cuba on Washington’s list of states that support terrorism.
