Helsinki plans to allocate money first for a test project – a three kilometer section.
In Finland, they started building a fence on the border with the Russian Federation. Work has begun on a three kilometer test section in Imatra. Finnish media Yle reported this on Tuesday, February 28.
“Work began on Monday to remove trees on both sides of the Imatra border crossing. A three-kilometer section of the so-called test fence will be built here. The authorities will conduct an experiment to see if the fence can withstand the winter frosts, snow loads or the mass of people who may come from the east,” – said the message.
In March, the construction of the road and the construction of the fence will begin, and then the creation of a technical control system. The pilot fence will be ready by the end of June. These works cost six million euros.
A trial fence three meters high with barbed wire will provide night video surveillance, spotlights and speakers in the most important areas.
Most of the entire fence will run in southeastern Finland, where the risk of large-scale illegal immigration is highest. Part of the fence could also be built at more northerly, less-priority border crossings.
The total length of the border fence will be 200 kilometers, or about 15% of the total length of the Finnish-Russian border, which is about 1,300 kilometers. The border adjustment is expected to be completed by 2025-2026. Its value will be 380 million euros.
It will be recalled that the media previously reported that Finland will be able to transfer Leopard tanks to Ukraine, but only after its entry into NATO.
