US Army veteran Andrew Peters of Marshfield, Wisconsin, died fighting in Ukraine on Feb. 16, CNN reports.
“We can confirm the deaths of US citizens in Ukraine. We continue to be in contact with their families and are providing all possible consular assistance,” a State Department spokesman said.
28-year-old Andrew Peters joined Ukraine’s International Defense Legion. The parents of the deceased volunteer said that “he understood well what is right and wrong”, so he felt the need to apply his old fighting skills “to help Ukrainians fight and liberate their country.”
“Andrew was very close to his siblings and loved by all. We are all proud of his courage and selfless sacrifice,” Peters’ parents said.
The American previously served in Afghanistan in 2014.
