President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky called the tragedy of Ukrainians in the town of Bucha the most terrible day for him on February 24, 2022, when he saw the consequences of the Russian occupation after the liberation of the city.
The devil – he is not somewhere there, he is on the ground, – the president answered after a slight pause.
He recalled the day when the team visited the already de-occupied Bucha in early April 2022.
Recall that the Buchan massacre, or genocide in Bucha, is a mass murder of the Ukrainian civilian population in the city of Bucha, Kiev region, accompanied by abductions, torture, rape, including children, and looting. The crimes were committed by Russia’s armed forces and other formations during the Russo-Ukrainian War during the Russian invasion in March 2022, despite repeated claims that Russia only attacks military targets.
More than 420 residents of the city were killed, the Ukrainian authorities called it the genocide of Ukrainians and appealed to the International Criminal Court with a request to investigate these events. Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov said that the number of people killed by Russian troops in Bucha is greater than in Vukovar (at least 255 people).
Russian authorities have denied any wrongdoing, calling evidence of the killings a provocation or staged. These claims have been debunked by international media including Bellingcat, Deutsche Welle, The Economist, BBC and The New York Times.
